PDP Postpones NEC Meeting Again Amid State Congress Crises

The PDP postpones NEC meeting for the second time, shifting the party’s 99th National Executive Committee meeting to October 24, 2024. The postponement, which has sparked internal discontent, was originally set for September 26 but has been delayed due to unresolved congress issues in eight states.

According to the National Working Committee (NWC), the postponement was necessary because congresses in states like Abia and Ebonyi have yet to be concluded due to litigation, while others are ongoing in states such as Benue, Ekiti, Kano, and Kaduna. The PDP postpones NEC meeting once again to ensure that complete congress reports from these states are available for discussion at the meeting.

The party’s leadership has been under fire for what some members see as a deliberate attempt to avoid addressing critical issues. A senior member of the NWC who spoke on condition of anonymity argued that the PDP postpones NEC meeting to protect certain interests within the party rather than deal with pressing concerns.

He expressed doubts about the official reasons provided, noting that litigation in some states could extend beyond the new meeting date. “It seems unlikely that all issues will be resolved within a month, and this may lead to further delays,” the source added.

Timothy Osadolor, the PDP Deputy National Youth Leader, voiced similar concerns, stating that while the reasons for postponing the NEC meeting may appear legitimate, the move has frustrated party members eager to tackle important matters. He noted that the decision to postpone the PDP NEC meeting leaves critical issues unresolved.

Osadolor stressed the urgency of convening the meeting, saying, “The party needs to address its challenges without delay. The NEC is the only platform where these issues can be effectively handled.”
