EdoDecides 2024: Obaseki Reveals Why He Went to INEC Collation Centre

Governor Godwin Obaseki explains his visit to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s collation center amid ongoing electoral processes

During the ongoing EdoDecides 2024 elections, Governor Godwin Obaseki addressed his presence at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) collation centre in Benin City. Obaseki clarified that his visit was prompted by reports indicating a halt in the collation process, raising concerns about electoral transparency.

The governor revealed that he had received reports around 1 a.m. suggesting that collation was being moved to the INEC head office. Additionally, Obaseki was informed that agents from his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), were being denied access to the collation centre. In response, he attempted to contact the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) to understand the situation but received no response.

This prompted Obaseki to personally visit the collation centre to meet with the REC and assess what measures were being taken by INEC to ensure the continuity of the collation process. Upon arrival, his presence sparked reactions from opposition members, leading to a confrontation that resulted in his exit from the premises by police escort.

Governor Obaseki emphasized that his primary aim was to safeguard the electoral process and ensure that all parties had fair access to the ongoing collation procedures. His departure, however, did not ease tensions, as members of the opposition, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), expressed dissatisfaction with his actions.
