Peter Obi Condemns Edo Election as an Example of State Capture

Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi criticizes the Edo State governorship election, calling it a blatant case of state capture and a threat to Nigeria’s democratic values

Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has expressed strong criticism of the recent Edo State governorship election, describing it as a clear case of state capture in Edo election. In a post on his X (Twitter) handle, the former governor of Anambra State condemned the flawed leadership recruitment process witnessed during the election, warning that it poses a serious threat to the country’s democracy.

According to Obi, the state capture in Edo election undermined the democratic principles that Nigerians have chosen to guide their political leadership. He emphasized that any nation whose leadership selection is manipulated to such an extent is bound for failure. “What happened over the weekend in the name of an election in Edo State does not reflect the democratic values we stand for,” Obi stated, referring to the widespread electoral irregularities that marred the election.

Obi also addressed the use of key electoral technologies such as IReV and BVAS, lamenting that despite significant investments, these systems were not properly utilized in the state capture in Edo election. He called on those in power to correct the situation rather than depend on such flawed processes to remain in office.

Furthermore, Obi issued a stern warning to individuals and institutions involved in rigging the state capture in Edo election, reminding them that their actions today will have consequences in the future. He urged lecturers and others complicit in undermining the electoral process to reflect on the long-term damage they are inflicting on Nigeria’s democracy, stating that this will ultimately affect them and future generations.

Obi concluded by reaffirming his commitment to building a democratic Nigeria where elections are free, fair, and truly representative of the people’s will. He insisted that the future of the country lies in governance that works for everyone, and not in the pursuit of power through unlawful means.
