Fubara Approves Employment of 2,000 Medical Personnel in Rivers State

Rivers State Governor, Siminialayi Fubara, has given the green light for the employment of 2,000 medical professionals in the state. Out of these, 1,000 personnel will be employed by the Rivers State Health Management Board, while the other 1,000 will be deployed to the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH).

Governor Fubara emphasized his administration’s commitment to laying a solid foundation for the future by nurturing a new generation of Rivers State residents, capable of excelling academically and professionally. He expressed his intent to raise individuals who can compete on both local and international levels.

During his address, Fubara mentioned that upon assuming office, he encountered the challenge of unpaid scholarship entitlements for medical students at Rivers State University. He promptly resolved the issue by releasing the necessary funds, highlighting his dedication to supporting medical education in the state.

Fubara made these remarks while receiving the accreditation panel of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), led by the Registrar, Dr. Fatima Kyari, at the Government House in Port Harcourt. He reminisced about a time when Rivers State was known for its high educational standards, asserting his desire to restore that reputation.

“We want to change the narrative in Rivers State. Education and hard work should be valued over negative influences like cultism. Even if one earns modestly, a justifiable means of livelihood is better than ill-gotten wealth,” Fubara stated.

Reflecting on the importance of medical education, the governor acknowledged that it is not an inexpensive endeavor but reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to addressing any challenges. He also assured the MDCN panel that any areas requiring improvement would be promptly addressed.

Fubara highlighted his administration’s focus on healthcare, education, and agriculture as key areas of development. He mentioned the ongoing remodeling of five zonal hospitals and efforts to ensure that intermediary medical services are functional across the state. The governor also committed to upholding the standards of medical training at the Rivers State University’s College of Medical Sciences, stressing that the discipline in medical sciences would be maintained.

He urged the MDCN panel to serve as ambassadors for Rivers State, dispelling negative perceptions about violence and instability in the state. Fubara reassured the panel that Rivers is a peaceful state, governed by discipline and a commitment to development without resorting to violence.

Dr. Fatima Kyari, the MDCN Registrar, praised Rivers State for its infrastructure and commitment to medical education. She acknowledged the state’s achievements in producing medical professionals and encouraged the governor to enhance opportunities for research, further establishing Rivers as a leader in medical education.

This move by Governor Fubara is part of his administration’s broader plan to improve healthcare services and raise the standard of medical training in Rivers State, ensuring that the state remains competitive both nationally and globally.
