ASUU Warns of Potential Strike as Tensions Rise with Nigerian Government

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a fresh 14-day ultimatum for the government to meet its demands or face industrial action

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a fresh strike notice, giving the Nigerian government a 14-day ultimatum to meet its long-standing demands. The ASUU strike notice follows the expiration of an earlier 21-day ultimatum, with the union expressing dissatisfaction over the government’s response to the issues at hand.

The ASUU strike notice was announced by the union’s president, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, who criticized the government for failing to fully implement key agreements, including the renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FG agreement. He emphasized that the ASUU strike notice serves as a final opportunity for the government to address the union’s grievances and avoid further disruptions in the university system.

ASUU, in its statement, reiterated that the government’s inability to honor previous agreements has worsened the challenges facing public universities. The ASUU strike notice also highlighted the union’s rejection of the government’s claim that insufficient funds are available, pointing to significant revenues from subsidy removal and currency devaluation.

The union, through its ASUU strike notice, raised concerns over unresolved issues, including withheld salaries, the implementation of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS), and the continuous use of the IPPIS system for salary payments.
