Complete List: Newly Elected Local Government Chairmen in Rivers State

The Action Peoples Party (APP) claims victory in 22 out of 23 local governments in Rivers State, with Etche’s results still pending

On October 5, voters across Rivers State participated in the election for their local government chairmen. The Action Peoples Party (APP) secured a dominant victory, clinching 22 out of 23 local governments, while the result for Etche remains pending due to ongoing collation. These newly appointed Rivers State LG chairmen will lead the grassroots governance of their respective areas, bringing a fresh wave of leadership to the state.

Despite some controversy surrounding the election’s legitimacy, the APP emerged as the dominant party. On October 6, the state electoral body officially declared the results for the 22 local government areas, except for Etche, where results are still being collated. This election showcases a diverse group of newly appointed Rivers State LG chairmen, with a mix of re-elected officials, former commissioners, and new leaders.

However, the election was not without challenges. Two explosions and gunfire were reported in parts of Port Harcourt on election day, adding to the tense atmosphere. Yet, this did not stop the announcement of the newly elected Rivers State LG chairmen, many of whom now look forward to leading their communities.

Andoni – Lazarus Gogote Nteogwuile

Asari-Toru – Sule Amachree

Bonny – Dame Hon. Anengi Barasua Claude-Wilcox (Re-elected)

Degema – Harry Agiriye (Former Permanent Secretary)

Eleme – Brain Gokpa (Serving Caretaker Committee Chairman)

Emohua – David Omereji (Serving Caretaker Committee Chairman)

Etche – Collation Ongoing

Gokana – Monday Dumiye

Ikwerre – Israel Abosi

Khana – Martins Nwigbo

Obio/Akpor – Chijioke Ihunwo (Serving Caretaker Committee Chairman)

Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni – Prince Isaac Umejuru (Former Commissioner for Urban Development under Gov. Fubara)

Although the election has concluded in most areas, the final result for Etche is still pending. Security forces continue to investigate the explosions and gunfire incidents reported during the election period, while the newly appointed Rivers State LG chairmen prepare to take office.
