Soludo’s Commitment to Local Government Autonomy Reaffirmed, APGA Counters Labour Party Claims

APGA lawmakers commend Governor Soludo’s stance on local government autonomy, refuting allegations by the Labour Party of undermining local governance

Lawmakers of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) have reiterated Governor Charles Soludo’s commitment to local government autonomy in Anambra State. This statement comes as a response to allegations by Labour Party (LP) legislators that Soludo was attempting to undermine the financial and administrative independence of the 21 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the state.

The Labour Party caucus, led by Senator Tony Nwoye, had accused the governor of pushing for the enactment of the State and Local Government Joint Account Law, a move they claimed would circumvent the Supreme Court ruling on local government financial autonomy. However, APGA legislators dismissed these claims, affirming that Soludo’s commitment to local government autonomy remains steadfast.

During a meeting of APGA lawmakers, the caucus clarified that the proposed Anambra State Local Government Administration Law, 2024, has been misinterpreted. They emphasized that Governor Soludo is dedicated to strengthening grassroots governance while ensuring accountability across all levels. APGA’s leader in the House of Representatives, Paschal Agbodike, expressed that the law is in no way an attempt to undermine the financial or administrative autonomy of the local councils.

“The accusations by the Labour Party are baseless,” Agbodike stated, reaffirming Soludo’s commitment to local government autonomy and highlighting the state’s legal mandate to regulate local government operations as provided under Section 7 of the 1999 Constitution.

The APGA caucus also called on Labour Party legislators to collaborate for the state’s development rather than engage in what they described as “political theatrics.” They further explained that the proposed law would enhance governance in Anambra by fostering state-local collaboration in education funding, salaries, pensions, and more.

In response to the LP’s claims, APGA lawmakers passed a vote of confidence in Governor Soludo, describing him as a visionary leader dedicated to local government autonomy and the progress of Anambra State.
