Governor Fubara Expresses Concern Over Being Singularly Mentioned by President Tinubu in Rivers Crisis

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has raised concerns after President Bola Tinubu specifically mentioned his name in relation to the violent incidents that have recently occurred in the state. These incidents have seen local government secretariats in Eleme, Ikwerre, and Emohua set ablaze, while gunshots rang out in Ahoada East as resistance against newly elected council officials intensified.

According to SaharaReporters, these violent clashes erupted across at least four local government areas. In response, President Tinubu called for restraint from Governor Fubara and other political figures while urging the police to ensure the safety of local government offices.

The President’s message was communicated through a statement signed by his special adviser on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga. It stated, “President Bola Tinubu has called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara, political leaders, and their supporters in Rivers State to exercise restraint and uphold the rule of law.”

Speaking on Channels TV, Governor Fubara reacted to the President’s comments, stating, “I don’t have any issue with the President’s intervention, but I am concerned that my name was the only one mentioned.”

Fubara explained that the source of the problem is well-known to both Nigerians and residents of Rivers State, and it is not something as complex as it might seem. “The issue is very simple. It’s as simple as ABC. Everyone in Nigeria, everyone in Rivers State knows where this issue is coming from. It’s not rocket science, and the issue is not about Fubara,” he emphasized.

The governor also commented on the role of law enforcement in the crisis, pointing out that the withdrawal of police forces from the affected secretariats may have contributed to the chaos. “Maybe the police pulling their men out of those secretariats is one of the reasons these hoodlums took advantage of the situation,” Fubara suggested.

He added, “I was never in support of the police withdrawing entirely. When they pulled out, that allowed the miscreants to exploit the situation and destroy the secretariats.”

Governor Fubara’s remarks underscore his concerns over the ongoing unrest in Rivers State and the handling of security in the region.
