A tragic petrol tanker explosion in Jigawa has resulted in the loss of over 90 lives, marking one of the deadliest accidents in recent memory. The petrol tanker explosion in Jigawa occurred late Tuesday in Majiya Town, Taura Local Government Area, leaving devastation in its wake.
According to the police, the tanker lost control near Khadija University and exploded, causing widespread casualties. Mr. Shi’isu Adam, the Police Spokesperson in Jigawa, confirmed the incident and expressed deep concern over the growing number of fatalities. In addition to those killed, around 50 people sustained various degrees of injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Ringim General Hospital.
Mass Casualties Due to Crowd Gathering
The petrol tanker explosion in Jigawa occurred around 11:30 pm, and according to the police spokesperson, despite repeated warnings from authorities to stay clear of accident scenes involving fuel tankers, a large crowd had gathered at the site. This contributed significantly to the high number of casualties.
“We are deeply concerned that people continue to approach such accident scenes despite clear warnings,” Adam stated. “This tragic loss of life could have been avoided if the crowd had stayed away.”
Mass Burial and Injuries
The police spokesperson further noted that a mass burial for the victims would be conducted at 9 a.m. on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the injured are receiving critical medical attention, and authorities are working to ensure that those affected by the petrol tanker explosion in Jigawa get the care they need.
The tanker involved in the accident was en route from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State when the driver lost control, resulting in the catastrophic explosion. Efforts to contact the driver for further information were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
