In a show of unity, the Nigerian Senate passes a vote of confidence in Godswill Akpabio following rumors of an impeachment plot
The Nigerian Senate has expressed its unwavering support for Senate President Godswill Akpabio by passing a vote of confidence in his leadership. This vote of confidence in Akpabio comes on the heels of speculation that there were plans to unseat him from his position.
The motion for the vote of confidence in Akpabio was introduced by Senator Abdul Ningi, representing Bauchi Central, following concerns raised about an alleged impeachment plot. Prior to Ningi’s motion, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi of Kebbi North addressed the chamber, stating that his privileges were breached by rumors suggesting that northern senators were behind the attempt to remove Akpabio.
Abdullahi emphasized that the northern senators had no intentions of challenging Akpabio’s leadership. “I am a senior member of this chamber and a member of the Northern Senators Forum, and I can confidently say there has been no such effort or discussion among the northern senators,” he said, clarifying the role of his colleagues in the issue.
After Abdullahi’s remarks, Ningi stepped forward, reinforcing the need for the Senate to stand behind Akpabio. “If we, as senators, are dissatisfied with Akpabio’s leadership, we will address it directly with him,” Ningi stated, adding that such concerns should be confronted openly rather than through rumors. As a result, he called for a vote of confidence in Akpabio and the leadership team of the National Assembly.
The motion was subsequently put to a voice vote, where it was unanimously adopted, thereby affirming the Senate’s continued confidence in Akpabio’s leadership.
This development is seen as a strategic move to quell any perceived instability within the Senate and to reinforce Akpabio’s mandate as the leader of Nigeria’s legislative body. With the successful passage of the vote of confidence in Akpabio, the Senate sends a clear message of unity amidst external speculations.
