Senator Ndume presses for cabinet changes and proposes an economic summit to address Nigeria’s economic challenges
Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, has advised President Bola Tinubu to take further action in his recent cabinet reshuffling by dismissing more ministers who are not meeting performance expectations. Ndume believes that this step will accelerate the delivery of Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, aimed at fostering growth and stability in Nigeria. He also urged Tinubu to prioritize the nation’s economic issues by convening a national economic summit.
In his recent statement from Abuja, Ndume praised Tinubu’s recent decision to restructure the cabinet, including the establishment of the Ministry of Regional Development to streamline oversight across various regional commissions. However, Ndume noted that certain ministers continue to fall short of their duties, saying, “More needs to be done because some ministers are still missing in action.”
Economic Summit Proposal
Calling for a focused approach to tackling Nigeria’s economic concerns, Ndume suggested that Tinubu organize a national economic summit to explore viable, home-grown solutions. Ndume proposed that the summit be led by respected economic experts such as Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Oby Ezekwesili, Akinwumi Adesina, and others who could offer insights beyond international prescriptions like those from the IMF and World Bank, which he described as burdensome for average Nigerians.
“This summit, led by these eminent Nigerians, will produce recommendations tailored to our unique economic landscape,” Ndume asserted. He expressed confidence that Tinubu would act on the recommendations to benefit the nation if they proved valuable.
Advocating for Fiscal Responsibility
Senator Ndume also commended President Tinubu’s recent efforts to trim government expenses and emphasized that other branches of government should mirror this commitment. In a period of economic strain, he emphasized that a collective reduction in operating costs is essential to ease pressure on public funds and redirect resources toward development.
By recommending the removal of non-performing ministers and urging the creation of a national summit, Ndume has placed emphasis on practical measures to address the country’s economic issues, suggesting a shift towards Nigerian-led economic strategies that resonate with citizens.
