Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has presented a proposed budget of N750.2 billion for the year 2025 to the state’s House of Assembly for approval. The budget reflects a significant focus on capital development and the advancement of key sectors such as education, health, and infrastructure.
In his address to the House of Assembly, led by Speaker Emmanuel Emeruwa, Governor Otti highlighted the disciplined management of the 2024 budget, which he claimed played a vital role in the state’s transformation across multiple sectors. The proposed 2025 budget sees an increase of around 30% over the previous year’s financial plan.
A substantial portion of the 2025 budget, N611.7 billion (approximately 82%), is earmarked for capital projects, while the remaining N138.6 billion (18%) will be allocated to recurrent expenditures. A key feature of the budget is the emphasis on education and health, with 20% of the total funds dedicated to education and 15% to healthcare. This allocation demonstrates the administration’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of the people in these critical areas.
Governor Otti outlined several specific initiatives under the 2025 budget, including N13 billion allocated for the construction of agro-industrial processing zones in the Ukwa, Bende, and Umunnochi local government areas. Additionally, N14.6 billion is set aside for the establishment of libraries and reading rooms across the state’s 184 wards, furthering the state’s commitment to improving education infrastructure.
A total of N18.9 billion has been earmarked for social benefits, underscoring the governor’s focus on enhancing the living conditions of the state’s residents. In another notable development, Otti reported that his administration had successfully reclaimed several state-owned agricultural assets previously in private hands without generating any returns for the state government.
Security also remains a top priority for Governor Otti, who expressed deep concern over the loss of security personnel and innocent citizens to criminal activities in the state. He reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening security measures to ensure the safety of lives and property across Abia.
The proposed budget for 2025 reflects Governor Otti’s ongoing efforts to foster growth, transparency, and development in Abia State, with a strong emphasis on education, health, and infrastructure as pillars for the state’s continued transformation.
