El-Rufai Stands Firm Amid Criticism: “I Don’t Give a Damn

Former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has made it clear that he does not care about the criticisms directed at him on social media. Reacting to a wave of backlash regarding his recent comments, El-Rufai responded assertively, stating that his critics are misinterpreting his words out of ignorance and prejudice.

Taking to his verified X.com account, El-Rufai expressed his indifference towards the opinions of those who judge him harshly. “Interpret, misinterpret, or reinterpret my posts however you wish. I frankly don’t give a damn,” he stated. “Insults and baseless abuse? Go ahead. Your judgments, rooted in ignorance and bigotry, won’t change a thing.”

The former governor’s remarks come in the wake of significant online criticism following a post he made about envy and hatred among Nigerians, where he used the political rise of U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris as an example.

El-Rufai emphasized that Nigeria’s challenges stem from a decline in the competence and commitment of its leadership. He highlighted the need to confront and eliminate the “incurable virus of envy” to achieve Nigeria’s potential greatness.

However, his comments sparked controversy, with notable figures like Banks Omishore, an aide to Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, accusing El-Rufai of lacking the moral standing to speak on such issues. Omishore referenced El-Rufai’s past conflicts with former Senate President Bukola Saraki as evidence.

Since leaving office, El-Rufai has faced political challenges, including the Senate’s rejection of his nomination as a ministerial candidate in August 2023. Additionally, his successor, Governor Uba Sani, claimed to have inherited a significant debt burden and contractual liabilities from El-Rufai’s administration, further fueling public scrutiny.

Despite the ongoing criticism and allegations, El-Rufai remains unshaken, reaffirming his stance that nothing will deter him from expressing his views.
