The United States Department of Justice is reportedly preparing to charge Dr. Ngozi Orabueze, the newly appointed leader of the Biafra Government in Exile (BRGIE), with mass murder allegations linked to violence in Nigeria’s South-East region.
Sources indicate that Orabueze’s leadership has intensified insecurity in the region, allegedly using pro-Biafra agitation as a platform for inciting unrest. This development comes after her predecessor, Simon Ekpa, was detained in Finland over terrorism-related offenses, including his suspected role in fueling violence through the Autopilot faction of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Orabueze, who assumed leadership following Ekpa’s arrest, has come under scrutiny for inflammatory rhetoric. In a widely circulated video, she purportedly called for violent action against uniformed personnel in South-East Nigeria, targeting police, military, and immigration officers.
In response to the escalating violence, IPOB’s political wing (IPOB-PW) has formally submitted a petition to the U.S. Department of Justice, urging Orabueze’s arrest and prosecution. According to the petition, Orabueze’s public calls for violence have led to fatalities among civilians and security operatives while disrupting social and economic stability in the region.
Nwachukwu Emereonye, spokesperson for IPOB-PW, explained the motivation behind the petition, emphasizing the group’s commitment to pursuing non-violent methods to achieve their goals.
“Our petition outlines how Orabueze’s incitement has created chaos in Igbo land,” Emereonye stated. “We want to restore peace and ensure our political grievances are addressed through lawful and peaceful means. Our people cannot continue to suffer because of reckless rhetoric.”
The IPOB-PW spokesperson underscored the need for justice, expressing optimism that the U.S. authorities would act swiftly. “We believe in dialogue, not bloodshed. We want Biafra, but we cannot support any movement that comes at the cost of innocent lives,” Emereonye reiterated.
The allegations against Orabueze have reignited debates surrounding the methods used by various factions advocating for Biafran independence. IPOB-PW’s petition seeks to draw a clear distinction between peaceful advocacy and violent agitation, urging international intervention to address the growing crisis.
Observers await the U.S. Department of Justice’s official stance on the petition and whether charges will be filed against Orabueze in the coming weeks. If pursued, this case could mark a significant shift in how international bodies respond to claims of incitement and violence tied to separatist movements.
The situation continues to evolve, as stakeholders in Nigeria’s South-East and beyond closely monitor developments that could reshape the trajectory of pro-Biafra agitation.
