FCT Residents Express Frustration Over Difficulties in Locating Subsidised Rice Sales Points
Residents of Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are finding it increasingly difficult to access the N40,000 subsidised rice, an initiative launched by the government to alleviate food costs. Although the sale of 30,000 metric tonnes of milled rice at this reduced rate was flagged off on September 5, 2024, by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, many citizens remain unsure of where to buy the N40,000 subsidised rice.
Kyari, at the launch, emphasized that the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s mission to ensure Nigerians do not go to bed hungry. However, despite the government’s efforts, the distribution process for the N40,000 subsidised rice has been far from smooth, leaving many citizens disillusioned.
In areas like Kuje and Bwari, residents have voiced their frustrations about the lack of designated sales points. One resident, Mrs Yunusa Eleojo, lamented having to buy rice at N84,000 from a wholesale vendor, more than double the promised price. Many other FCT residents share similar stories, and concerns grow that middlemen could complicate the distribution of the N40,000 subsidised rice, further driving up costs.
While the government has called for cooperation and transparency to make the scheme work, it remains to be seen if the N40,000 subsidised rice will become more accessible to the public as promised.
For now, the struggle continues for Nigerians eager to benefit from the initiative but unable to locate where to purchase the rice at the official rate.
