Tinubu to Reshuffle Cabinet Based on Ministers’ Performance, Presidency Announces

The Presidency reveals that Tinubu’s cabinet reshuffle will be guided by performance metrics and public opinion, with no specific timeline yet confirmed

The Presidency has confirmed that Tinubu’s cabinet reshuffle will be based on the performance of his ministers. While there is no set date for this exercise, it could take place before or after Independence Day on October 1. President Bola Tinubu, who formed his 47-member cabinet in August 2023, aims to evaluate their performance through data-driven assessments and public feedback.

Speaking to journalists at the State House in Abuja, Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, shared the details of the reshuffle plans. He was accompanied by O’tega Ogra, the Senior Special Assistant on Digital and New Media. Onanuga explained that there is no specific timeline for when Tinubu’s cabinet reshuffle will occur but stressed that the President has expressed his intention to make changes.

“I don’t have any timeline. The President has indicated that he plans to reshuffle the cabinet, but the exact date is still unknown. However, he has made it clear that the reshuffle is part of his agenda,” Onanuga stated.

Adding further clarity, Ogra noted that the President would rely on empirical data in making his decisions. This process includes a performance review coordinated by Hajia Hadiza Bala Usman, Special Adviser on Policy Coordination and head of the Central Delivery Coordination Unit. The reviews will guide Tinubu’s cabinet reshuffle, ensuring it aligns with the administration’s goals and public interest.

Ministers Directed to Promote Government Achievements

Additionally, President Tinubu has instructed his ministers to actively publicize the administration’s accomplishments. During the last Federal Executive Council meeting, he emphasized that ministers must communicate the progress made by their ministries.

Onanuga pointed out that some ministers have been reluctant to engage with the media, which has contributed to the perception that the government is not doing enough. “The President wants his ministers to talk about what they are doing. He wants them to highlight the work being done, as the government has been making strides in various areas,” Onanuga added.

Government Steers Clear of NNPC-Dangote Petrol Price Dispute

Regarding the ongoing controversy between the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and Dangote Refinery over petrol pricing, the Presidency clarified that it would not interfere. Onanuga reiterated that both companies are free to set their own prices due to the deregulation of the petroleum market.

“The PMS price regime is now deregulated, meaning both NNPC and Dangote can set their own prices. The government is not involved in this matter, as both companies operate independently,” Onanuga said. He added that the competition between the two entities could ultimately benefit Nigerian consumers through lower prices.

As of now, the pump price of petrol in Nigeria is hovering around N895 per litre, with NNPCL and Dangote Refinery at odds over pricing strategies.

Conclusion

While Tinubu’s cabinet reshuffle is anticipated, the exact timing remains uncertain. What is clear, however, is that the reshuffle will be performance-driven, with public opinion playing a crucial role. Ministers have also been urged to communicate the achievements of the administration more effectively, and the government remains hands-off in the ongoing NNPCL-Dangote price debate.
