Nnamdi Kanu’s Wife Urges UK Government to Intervene in Husband’s Detention
Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, wife of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has made a heartfelt appeal to the UK government, urging them to push for Nnamdi Kanu’s release from Nigerian detention. Kanu has been held since June 2021, following his controversial arrest and extradition from Kenya under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. His prolonged detention has left his family, particularly his young son, grappling with emotional and psychological challenges.
In a recent statement, Uchechi Okwu-Kanu shared a personal story, recounting a poignant moment with her son that highlighted the toll Nnamdi Kanu’s absence has taken on their family. She stressed that her son expressed deep pain in his schoolwork, noting how his father’s absence has left a void in his life that no one else can fill. This family strain is part of the reason she is calling on the UK to uphold its reputation as a champion of human rights and fairness, and take swift action in securing Nnamdi Kanu’s release.
She further emphasized the UK’s long-standing commitment to human rights, recalling its crucial role in establishing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights after World War II. According to her, the UK’s historical legacy of justice and fairness makes it an ideal ally in advocating for her husband and other British citizens who are unjustly detained. She implored the UK government to ensure that Nnamdi Kanu’s release is brought to the forefront of discussions with Nigeria, urging them to take a leading role in pushing for his freedom.
Uchechi Okwu-Kanu concluded by reaffirming that the fight for Nnamdi Kanu’s release is not just a personal plea but a broader call for justice and the upholding of fundamental human rights.
