Federal High Court in Abuja drops charges against 119 protesters as attorney-general moves to discontinue case
In a pivotal ruling, the court has dismissed the case against 119 protesters involved in the nationwide #EndBadGovernance demonstrations. The Federal High Court in Abuja ruled in favor of discontinuing the suit following a formal request by M.D. Abubakar, the attorney-general’s counsel, to withdraw the charges.
Judge Obiora Egwuatu, who presided over the case, granted Abubakar’s request to take over and dismiss the charges. During the hearing, Abubakar argued for the attorney-general’s authority to intervene and close the case, highlighting the administration’s decision to halt legal proceedings against those accused.
The protest, which initially brought widespread attention to governance issues in the country, led to multiple arrests and charges against demonstrators. However, the decision to withdraw this suit signals a shift, reflecting a potential de-escalation in the government’s approach to handling cases related to the #EndBadGovernance movement.
As the court session concluded, many observers noted the symbolic importance of this dismissal, as it sends a message on the government’s evolving stance toward freedom of expression and public demonstrations. With the case officially struck out, the 119 protesters are no longer under legal threat from this particular suit, marking a significant moment for advocates of civic rights in the country.
