Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike recently addressed public concerns over a government initiative to provide judges with dedicated residential quarters in Abuja. Speaking during a media session, Wike emphasized that the project, sanctioned by President Bola Tinubu and approved in the 2024 federal budget, aims solely to support judicial independence by improving judges’ living conditions.
Wike clarified that his role is strictly that of an implementer, following a policy laid out by President Tinubu. “The President raised a valid question about where our judges live. He stressed that judges without stable housing may be vulnerable to external pressures,” Wike explained. “It’s a proactive move to ensure that judges have secure, government-owned accommodations, fostering an independent judiciary free from potential manipulations.”
This project is part of broader welfare reforms meant to address the housing needs of Nigeria’s judiciary. According to Wike, it’s a significant step in shielding judicial officers from undue influence by removing their reliance on rented accommodations, which often places them in less-than-ideal neighborhoods. He argued that the government’s commitment to this initiative reflects its dedication to the rule of law and a robust, autonomous judiciary.
Addressing critics, Wike defended his role, noting that the housing project had been thoroughly debated and endorsed by both the executive and legislative branches. “The Federal Executive Council has approved the necessary contracts, and the National Assembly has appropriated the budget,” he added. “I am simply fulfilling my duty by executing this policy. This isn’t about me or my agenda.”
Reflecting on his own tenure as governor, Wike mentioned his similar approach to improving judiciary welfare, suggesting that providing stable housing for judges is a standard practice aimed at strengthening judicial integrity. He also took the opportunity to criticize opposition figures, especially those in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), whom he accused of sowing discord instead of acknowledging beneficial government initiatives.
