Keyamo to Launch Abia Airport Project Amidst Development Initiatives

Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo

The Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, is poised to kick-start the construction of a new airport in Nsulu, Abia State. Scheduled for Tuesday, the groundbreaking ceremony marks a significant milestone in the collaboration between the Federal Government and the administration of Governor Alex Otti.

Transforming Abia’s Aviation Landscape

During a recent media briefing in Umuahia, Prince Okey Kanu, Abia State’s Commissioner for Information, shared insights into the ambitious project. Initially envisioned as an airstrip, Governor Otti championed the idea of upgrading it to a full-fledged airport, capable of handling larger aircraft.

“The state government will oversee the construction of modern runways to ensure the airport meets international standards,” Kanu disclosed. He further emphasized that the airport would serve as a gateway to boost the state’s economic activities and unlock its tourism potential.

Education Revamp: Smart Schools Initiative

In tandem with infrastructure projects, Governor Otti’s administration has outlined a bold plan to revolutionize the education sector. The state government aims to establish 20 smart schools across Abia’s 17 local government areas. These institutions will be equipped with cutting-edge facilities, including interactive boards and internet connectivity, to foster a modern learning environment.

The initiative complements the upcoming free and compulsory education policy for primary and junior secondary school students, slated to begin in January 2025. “This policy underscores the government’s commitment to eradicating the issue of out-of-school children in Abia,” Kanu stated.

Health Preparedness and Infrastructure Milestones

Highlighting Abia’s proactive approach to health challenges, the Commissioner noted that the state has remained free of recent outbreaks, including COVID-19 variants, m-pox, and diphtheria. He also commended the renovation of an Emergency Operation Centre by Caritas, which will bolster the state’s capacity to manage potential health crises.

On the infrastructure front, Kanu revealed that the government has completed three additional roads in Aba, increasing the total number of reconstructed roads under Governor Otti’s administration to 147. These developments aim to improve connectivity and stimulate economic growth.

Budget Presentation and Public School Standards

Governor Otti is set to present the 2025 budget to the State House of Assembly on the same day as the airport inauguration. The budget is expected to align with the administration’s vision for fiscal responsibility and sustainable development.

Meanwhile, the government has reiterated its commitment to raising the standards of public education. Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, criticized the quality of some private schools in the state, emphasizing that improved public school facilities and teacher welfare would shift the educational balance. “With smart schools and better incentives for teachers, especially in rural areas, public schools will attract more students,” Ekeoma asserted.

A New Era for Abia State

The series of initiatives—from the airport project to educational reforms and health preparedness—signal a transformative era for Abia State. As residents and stakeholders await the unveiling of these projects, the state is positioning itself as a hub of progress and innovation in the region.
