Dele Farotimi Denies Mediation Allegations, Upholds Integrity of His Book

Prominent Nigerian lawyer and author Dele Farotimi, currently detained in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, has firmly denied claims of orchestrating any form of mediation or apology in the ongoing legal battle involving Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Afe Babalola. His attorney, Tope Temokun, recently clarified these matters during an appearance on Inside Sources with Laolu Akande.

Farotimi, arrested in connection with allegations of defamation stemming from his book Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, which critiques judicial corruption, remains resolute in his stance. Temokun stated that his client did not authorize former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi—or anyone else—to seek an out-of-court settlement or issue an apology to Babalola.

During his visit to Farotimi in prison, Temokun sought to address widespread speculation surrounding Obi’s recent visits to both Farotimi and Babalola. According to Temokun, these visits led to unfounded rumors suggesting Farotimi might have requested intervention or reconciliation.

In their conversation, Farotimi expressed disappointment over such assumptions, emphasizing his unwavering commitment to the principles he has upheld throughout his career. He asserted, “Anyone who knows my philosophy and principles should understand that I would never ask anyone to beg on my behalf. Such suggestions are deeply disheartening.”

Farotimi further highlighted that Obi’s actions were independent, as the former presidential candidate holds no official connection to his legal defense or strategy. Temokun remarked, “Peter Obi is an elder statesman and has the liberty to visit anyone, but Farotimi categorically stated that he did not send him or any other person to plead on his behalf.”

In response to the allegations at the heart of the case, Farotimi maintained that his book contains no inaccuracies. He believes his detractors are targeting him because of the uncomfortable truths he revealed about Nigeria’s justice system. “They are fighting the truth,” he reportedly told Temokun, adding that he is confident justice will prevail and that “he will have the last laugh.”

Temokun emphasized the importance of justice being served for all involved parties. “This is not just about Farotimi or Afe Babalola,” he stated. “The integrity of our justice system is at stake, and ensuring fairness for all is paramount.”

Farotimi’s legal team remains committed to defending his rights, with Temokun assuring the public that they will continue to advocate for accountability and transparency in the judicial process.

As the case progresses, Farotimi’s stance serves as a reminder of the critical role of free speech and the need to confront systemic issues within Nigeria’s institutions.
