NLC Threatens Action if Ajaero is Not Released by Midnight

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued an ultimatum to the federal government, demanding the release of Joe Ajaero, its detained president, by midnight. The NLC expressed outrage over Ajaero’s arrest, labeling the act as unlawful and a violation of both workers’ rights and democratic principles.

Ajaero was reportedly detained at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja while en route to the United Kingdom to attend a Trade Union Congress meeting. His detention has sparked widespread condemnation from the NLC, which is calling for immediate action.

In a statement released by the congress’ Deputy President, Adeyanju Adewale, the NLC described the detention as “brazen and illegal,” and a blatant disregard for the rule of law. The council has demanded the release of Joe Ajaero by midnight and urged the government to reverse the controversial fuel price hike.

The labor organization has also placed its members and affiliates on high alert, warning that it will not tolerate any further attacks on workers’ rights. An emergency meeting of the National Executive Council is being convened to address the government’s “authoritarianism and lawlessness.”

The NLC has reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding the rights of workers and resisting any form of oppression. It has further called on the government to reverse its policies and prioritize the implementation of the new National Minimum Wage, stressing the need for a more equitable approach to governance.

Should the federal government fail to comply with the demand for the release of Joe Ajaero, the NLC has hinted at further actions that could include mass mobilization and protests.
