Nuhu Ribadu Sues Edo PDP Chairman Aziegbemi, Demands N10 Billion in Damages

Nuhu Ribadu defamation lawsuit has taken center stage as the National Security Adviser (NSA) of Nigeria files a legal claim against Anthony Aziegbemi, the Edo State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This lawsuit follows allegations made by Aziegbemi accusing the presidency, through Ribadu and the Department of State Services (DSS), of attempting to manipulate the upcoming Edo gubernatorial election.

In a statement titled “EDO 2024: PRESIDENCY’S MOVE TO INTERFERE, MANIPULATE GUBER POLL USING DSS, NSA UNCOVERED,” Aziegbemi alleged that Ribadu facilitated the release of $2 million to the APC candidate to buy votes and bribe security agencies. The PDP chairman’s claim has sparked public outrage, with many questioning the integrity of the electoral process.

Ribadu’s Response and Legal Action

Ribadu’s legal team, Charles Musa and Co., responded with a strongly worded letter condemning the allegations as defamatory and harmful to Ribadu’s well-established reputation. The firm described the accusations as false, pointing out that they portray Ribadu as an enabler of corruption and accuse his office of political interference.

In the letter, Ribadu’s legal representatives demanded an immediate retraction of Aziegbemi’s statement, as well as a formal apology. They also requested that the apology be widely publicized in both print and online media outlets.

The legal team argued that Nuhu Ribadu defamation lawsuit is necessary to protect his reputation, emphasizing that the accusations are baseless and contradict Ribadu’s long-standing career dedicated to fighting corruption.

Ribadu’s Distinguished Career

Mallam Nuhu Ribadu has a well-documented history of integrity, having served as the pioneer Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). His tenure at the EFCC was marked by a robust fight against corruption, and his unwavering commitment to ethical conduct has earned him national and international recognition.

The letter from Ribadu’s lawyers underlined that it is “inconceivable” for him to be involved in such dubious actions, referencing his track record and dedication to transparency. “Our Client has consistently demonstrated integrity throughout his career, and the baseless allegations made by the Edo PDP chairman stand in stark contrast to his ethical reputation.”

Demands and Legal Consequences

As part of the demands in the lawsuit, Ribadu is seeking N10 billion in damages for the harm done to his reputation. His legal team has specified a list of media platforms, including newspapers, online sites, TV, and radio channels, where the retraction and apology must be published.

The letter outlined, “Payment of N10,000,000,000 (Ten Billion Naira) as damages for reputational and other injuries” must be made. If Aziegbemi does not comply with these demands within seven days, Ribadu’s legal team will proceed with further legal action to enforce his rights.

As the Edo 2024 gubernatorial election approaches, this legal battle has captured public attention, further complicating the political landscape in the state.
