Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), recently paid a significant visit to the esteemed legal luminary and founder of Afe Babalola University, Chief Afe Babalola, at his office in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State. The purpose of this visit, sources suggest, was to discuss the ongoing legal challenges surrounding human rights lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi.
Obi was cordially welcomed by Babalola’s senior aide and then ushered into a private meeting with the revered legal icon. The discussion reportedly lasted over an hour. According to insiders, the visit was initiated by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who sought to mediate a peaceful resolution to the dispute.
Context of the Case
Dele Farotimi’s legal troubles stem from allegations of defamation linked to his publication, Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System. In the book, Farotimi reportedly accused Chief Babalola of influencing decisions at the Supreme Court, a claim that has since led to his arraignment before a Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti. Additionally, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has filed a separate cybercrime-related suit against Farotimi at the Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti.
Although the Magistrate Court granted Farotimi bail set at N50 million, with the condition of securing a guarantor who owns landed property in Ekiti State, his legal team was still working to fulfill these requirements at the time of reporting.
Follow-Up Visit to Correctional Facility
After his meeting with Chief Babalola, Obi proceeded to the Ado-Ekiti Correctional Centre, located along Afao Road, to meet with Farotimi. This encounter is believed to be a continuation of efforts to resolve the legal impasse. Details of their discussion remain undisclosed, but sources indicate that Obi’s visit underscores his commitment to fostering dialogue and seeking amicable solutions.
Obi’s Silence on the Matter
Attempts by journalists to engage Obi for comments after his meetings proved unsuccessful. The former presidential candidate avoided media interactions, entering his vehicle quietly and leaving the premises without addressing the press.
Legal Proceedings to Continue
Farotimi’s trial is scheduled to resume tomorrow at the Magistrate Court, where further developments are expected. Meanwhile, the cybercrime case brought by the Inspector General of Police also looms, adding complexity to the human rights lawyer’s legal battles.
This unfolding story continues to draw public attention, with many keenly observing how the involvement of prominent figures like Peter Obi and Afe Babalola might influence its outcome.
